Giving Back: Our Service Projects
As members of Alpha Sigma Tau, we continually re-pledge ourselves to contribute our share to the progress of mankind, and social service is a vital aspect of our lives and our sisterhood. It's our way of expressing concern for others and our environment. Nationally, all AST chapters are committed to supporting Habitat for Humanity and Pine Mountain Settlement School. Locally, we support area schools with reading initiatives and mentoring activities, the elderly with gift baskets and time spent at nursing homes, the needy with clothing and canned food drives, and our environment with many campus and community clean-up projects.
Our trademark fundraiser is our annual Rock-a-Thon, held each spring semester. It began with local businesses, organizations, and other Greeks sponsoring our members to rock in rocking chairs through the night on the front porch of Webb Hall. Our chapter has recently turned this event into more of a "Rock"-a-Thon by having live bands, DJs, and dancing contests to help raise money for charity. Rock-a-Thon 2014 benefitted the Wounded Warrior Project, and our chapter raised $900 for the organization. Our 2013 Rock-a-Thon benefited the American Heart Association, with activities that focused on leading a healthy lifestyle, as well as a raffle and a contest to see which faculty member had to kiss a pig--the lucky winner was Richard Hester, Director of Student Life! In 2012, we paired our annual Rock-a-Thon with an Undy 5K race to raise funds for the National Colon Cancer Alliance's fight against colon cancer, a cause that has become dear to our members' hearts.
