The Coat of Arms/Crest: Ruth Magers Glosser designed the current Coat of Arms while a member of the Alpha Chapter in the college year 1922-1923.The Coat of Arms is a shield divided into four parts with the following symbols: in the upper right, a book; in the upper left a crown; in the lower right, an anchor; and in the lower left, six stars. Above the shield is a candle with its spreading rays. The words "Alpha Sigma Tau" in Greek appear on a band below the shield. This insignia is used on stationary, jewelry, favors, jackets, and similar items. Only initiated members may wear this crest.
The Badge: The Badge of Alpha Sigma Tau is a six-pointed shield of black enamel and gold displaying the Sorority letters in the center. The badge may be bordered with pearls. The badge of an initiated advisor has rubies at four points; National Council members have emeralds; and the National President has diamonds. The badge is symbolic of vows taken on initiation day and should be displayed with this
clearly in mind. It is never worn by anyone who is not an initiated member of the Sorority. It should be worn over the heart.
New Member Pins: Each pledged member receives a pledged member pin to wear during her pledge period. It is returned to the chapter at initiation when the badge is presented in its place. The pledged member pin is a monogram of AST in gold to be worn in the same manner as the badge, over the heart.
